<r:Abstract>
<r:Content xml:lang="en"><p align="justify">The dataset was collected as part of the study "Friendship and Identity in School," with the aim of investigating the relationship between adolescents' friendship networks and their ethnic identification (Leszczensky et al. 2014). The dataset includes longitudinal information from up to six waves of data collection at ten schools in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, known for its high percentage of students with a migration background.
The schools, representing various educational levels (lower secondary, intermediate secondary, and comprehensive), were randomly selected based on the proportion of non-native students. Within each school, three grades were surveyed. The study began in 2013 with the fifth, sixth, and seventh grades and spanned six waves approximately nine months apart. Participation required written parental consent. The dataset encompasses 2,928 students nested within 29 grades and 95 classrooms, all potentially eligible for participation in any wave. Of these, 2,701 students participated at least once. Response rates were consistently high, averaging nearly 85 percent per wave, with a panel response rate close to 90 percent. To explore the interplay between friendship networks and ethnic identification, the dataset includes sociometric questions capturing students' friendship networks and a novel measurement of ethnic identification. In addition to friendship data, the dataset contains information on demographics, leisure activities, academic performance, musical and sports preferences, perceived discrimination, attitudes, religion, family situations, contact opportunities, and parental opinions. This comprehensive dataset is suitable for a wide range of research inquiries that go beyond the study's initial research question.</p></r:Content>
